Mary A. Slizewski

Mary A. Slizewski, 102, of Holiday City South, Toms River, passed away on Sunday, October 1, 2023, at Chelsea at East Brunswick in East Brunswick, New Jersey. Born Friday, January 21, 1921 in Staten Island, New York, Mary was the daughter of the late Giovanni and Maria Gambardella. Mary was raised on Staten Island and attended McKee High School, where she took up sewing. During WWII Mary worked for Bethlehem Steel, supporting the war efforts. Mary would meet the love of her life, Vincent Slizewski and the couple would marry. They resided on Staten Island and that is where they would raise their children. Mary worked in the family business, a Dry Goods store in the Mariners Harbor section of Staten Island, she continued to work there until they sold the store. Mary also worked in retail working on Richmond Ave in Port Richmond and also in New York City. After leaving retail Mary worked in real estate, working for different agencies on Staten Island. After retirement Mary moved to Holiday City South in Toms River. Mary was the matriarch of her family, known as Mom, Grandma, and GGMa to her family. Mary had an abundance of family and friends, she was a loving and caring woman, who stuck to her old fashioned values, and loved God, saying her prayers every morning. Mary loved to take the opportunity to dance whenever there was good music playing, and also take trips to Atlantic City. She lived a beautiful, fulfilling life, her daughter Dolores noted, 'my mother fought off aging by never admitting to helplessness'. Mary will be deeply missed by all those that love her. Mary was predeceased by her beloved husband Vincent, by her loving daughter in law Patricia, and by her caring brothers. Mary is survived by her loving children, Dolores Brandenburg and her husband Brian, Vincent Slizewski, Richard Slizewski and his wife Karen, and Kenneth Slizewski, by her cherished grandchildren, Brian Jr., Kevin, Nicole, Danielle, Vincent, Melissa, Heather, Andrew, Kaleigh, and Kenneth, and by her adored 12 great grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM on Thursday, October 5, 2023, at Michael Hegarty & John Vincent Scalia Home For Funerals and Cremation Service, 3377 US Highway 9, Old Bridge, New Jersey. A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 AM on Friday at Our Lady Help of Christians located at 7396 Amboy Rd Staten Island, New York 10307. Interment will be in Resurrection Cemetery, Staten Island, NY.
