Margaret Eileen Hooghuis

February 11, 1929 - March 17, 2018

Margaret Eileen Hooghuis, 89 of Old Bridge, New Jersey died on Saturday, March 17, 2018, at home surrounded by her loving family. Born Monday, February 11, 1929 in Edgeworthstown, County Longford Ireland, she was the daughter of the late Thomas and Ellen McCormick Margaret was raised in Ireland and graduated High School in County Longford. It was at the age of 27 on St. Patrick's Day in 1956 that she would arrive in the United States, exactly 62 years ago to the day that she would arrive at St. Peter's Gates to go home to Heaven. When Margaret arrived in the United States she first lived in Brooklyn. She would work in New York, and that is where she would meet the love of her life, the late Joseph Hooghuis. The two would live in Staten Island and raise their family there. During that time Margaret worked as a book keeper in New York for Searson Loebes and Rhodes. Margaret was an active member of St. Patrick's Parish in Staten Island, where Joseph was a Deacon for many years. It was 11 years ago that Margaret moved to Old Bridge, NJ to be closer to her children and grandchildren. Margaret was a fan of the NY Mets, she enjoyed gardening and loved to read. She loved animals, especially her many cats and she was extremely proud of her Irish Heritage. Margaret enjoyed spending time at the Old Bridge Senior Center, and was a member of the Red Hat Society. She will be missed by all those that loved her. Margaret was predeceased by her beloved husband of 49 years, Joseph, and by her loving son John, who passed away in 2014. Margaret is survived by her loving children, Kevin Hooghuis and his wife Mary Anne, Dennis Hooghuis, and Ann Dealy and her husband Richard, by her daughter in law Lisa Hooghuis, by her cherished grandchildren, Brian Hooghuis and his wife Lisa, Gabe Hooghuis, Allison Hooghuis, Bernadette Weir and her husband Ryan, and Valerie Masserant and her husband Nick, and by her adored great grandchildren, Matthew, and Hannah. A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 AM on Tuesday at St. Ambrose Church located at 81 Throckmorton Ln Old Bridge, New Jersey 08857. The family will receive friends from 2:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Monday, March 19, 2018, at Michael Hegarty & John Vincent Scalia Home For Funerals and Cremation Service, 3377 US Highway 9, Old Bridge, New Jersey.
