Nicholas Vitale

Nicholas Vitale, 99 of Matawan, New Jersey passed away on Friday, May 19, 2023. Born Saturday, August 4, 1923 in Brooklyn, New York, Nick was the son of the late Luigi and Jennie Vitale. Nick was raised in the Bedford Stuyvesant neighborhood of his beloved Brooklyn - "God's Country" where he met and married the love of his life, Catherine. They started a family of their own and raised their children in the Flatbush section of Brooklyn. For nearly fifty years, Nick worked as a jewelry salesman with William Barthman Jewelers, on Maiden Lane in Manhattan. He proudly called it the 'Tiffany of Downtown'. After retiring, Nick and Kay moved to Matawan, NJ to be closer to family. Nick was a big fan of the Brooklyn Dodgers, and after their move to the West Coast he became a fan of the NY Mets. Nick loved the game. He volunteered for more than 30 years with the West Highway Little League in Brooklyn, which in 1968 honored him with the first ever "Good Guy Award". More than anything else, Nick loved being surrounded by his family. Known to both family and friends as simply "Poppy", he was a loving man who will be missed by all that knew him. They will always carry with them his signature farewell: be good to yourself. Nick was predeceased by his beloved wife Kay, and by his siblings, Jeannette, Andrew, Gloria, and Theresa. Nick is survived by his loving children, Nick Vitale and Barbara Vitale, his son in law Richard Medina, his daughter in law Kim Vitale, by his caring brother Thomas, by his cherished grandchildren, Michelle, Nicky, John, Evan, Richard, Victoria, Bernard, and Catherine, and by his cherished great grandchildren, Kelly, Ashley, Nicholas, Jax, Lydia, Ellie, and Nathan. The family will receive friends from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM and 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM on Monday, May 22, 2023, at Michael Hegarty & John Vincent Scalia Home For Funerals and Cremation Service, 3377 US Highway 9, Old Bridge, New Jersey. A Funeral Mass will be held at 9:30 AM on Tuesday at St. Clements Church located at 172 Freneau St Matawan, New Jersey 07747. Donations, in lieu of flowers, to the American Cancer Society in memory of Nick would be appreciated.
